7 Classic Games That Deserve A Remake Right Now

PlayStation loves remakes…they should take note!

Some games are timeless classics, but even the best games age—sometimes like wine in a rich guy’s cellar, and sometimes like Overwatch. Whether it’s outdated graphics, clunky controls, or hardware limitations, plenty of legendary games are begging for a second chance. On this week’s episode of Good Playing With You, we dug into the games we’d love to see brought back to life. Here are seven classics we think deserve a remake or remaster right now.

1. Archon

These were top-tier graphics at one point.

If you’ve never heard of Archon, don’t feel bad—it’s an absolute hidden gem from my Commodore 64 days (and, incidentally, one of the first 5 games published by EA). Imagine chess, but with a fantasy twist - fantastical monsters and creatures, like golems, wizards and dragons, duke it out in real-time battles whenever a piece tries to claim a square. The blend of strategy and action is brilliant, and a modern remake could take this concept to new heights with slick graphics, online multiplayer, and deeper combat mechanics. Plus, who wouldn’t want to see a manticore fight a phoenix in glorious 4K?

2. Killzone

Space Nazis? We don’t need no stinkin’ space Nazis.

Sony’s Killzone series delivered gripping first-person shooter action with incredible visuals for its time. But in a world where single-player FPS campaigns are becoming rare, Killzone deserves a comeback. There was an HD remaster in 2012, but a remake of the original with updated mechanics could remind everyone why this series was such a powerhouse on PlayStation. Guerrilla Games—put down your Horizon bows for a minute and give us some Helghast chaos, please.

3. Dark Souls 1 & 2

You are remade.

FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series redefined the action RPG genre, but the first two entries are showing their age. Dark Souls 1 and 2 deserve the kind of love and care that went into the Demon’s Souls remake—modern visuals, smoother mechanics, and quality-of-life improvements would make these games more approachable for new players while reigniting the passion of Souls veterans. Dark Souls 2, in particular, is a divisive title that could shine with a few tweaks to its mechanics and world design. Let’s bring these brutal classics back to life!

4. Titanfall

I mean, just look at this! How was this not a hit?

Respawn’s Titanfall series gave us fast-paced, mech-infused combat that felt ahead of its time. But Titanfall 2 never got the attention it deserved, thanks to some questionable release timing (it got sandwiched with a Call of Duty game and Battlefield 1). A remake or remaster of the original, packed with modern visuals, crossplay multiplayer, and some bonus single-player content, could be the boost this franchise needs to make a triumphant return. We’re ready to wall-run into battle one more time. Or, just give us a third one - and keep Apex Legends out of it.

5. Assassin’s Creed

Imagine this…but no longer green/gray!

The original Assassin’s Creed and its sequel introduced players to a rich world of historical intrigue, parkour, and stealth assassinations, but it’s been a while since Altair and Ezio got their time in the sun. A proper remake or remaster could overhaul the first game’s repetitive mission structure and give the sequel’s breathtaking Florence a modern glow-up. These games set the stage for one of the most successful franchises in gaming history, and they deserve to be rediscovered by a new generation of players.

6. Prototype

Knife hands. KNIFE HANDS?!

Before Spider-Man was swinging through New York, Alex Mercer was climbing skyscrapers, consuming enemies to take their form, and chucking helicopters into oblivion. Prototype was chaotic, violent, and pure fun. A remake with updated controls, better traversal mechanics, and more engaging open-world activities would make this cult favorite a smash hit all over again. Throw in a new version of the sequel for bonus points.

7. Ocarina of Time

Take me back, Ocarina, to change my 8th grade graduation cowboy hat.

Nintendo gave The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time a fantastic remaster on the 3DS, but it’s time for a true remake. Imagine revisiting Hyrule with Breath of the Wild’s graphics engine, revamped dungeons, and orchestral music. Keep the story and structure the same, but modernize the controls and visuals—this is a game that deserves to feel as magical now as it did in 1998.
